Where Anki wins
- It is free on desktop and Android. AnkiDroid costs nothing, and the desktop app has no subscription. Only AnkiMobile, its iOS app, is a paid one-time purchase ($24.99), with no recurring fee.
- Its scheduler is about as refined as spaced repetition gets. Since 2023 Anki's default algorithm has been FSRS, trained on hundreds of millions of real review logs, and every interval and rule underneath it is yours to inspect or override.
- Thousands of community add-ons let you reshape note types, the review screen, statistics and sync behavior.
- AnkiWeb has a large library of shared decks. For many standard courses, someone has already built one.
Where Auto Cards wins
- You don't write the cards. Upload the PDF, Word doc or slide deck you already have and Auto Cards reads it and writes the first draft of the deck for you; in Anki, every card is typed or imported by hand.
- A much shorter learning curve. Anki's power comes with a genuinely technical interface; Auto Cards is built to be usable the first time you open it.
- Use multiple choice, true/false, typed-answer and classic flip cards. Auto Cards generates and grades them automatically.
Choose Anki if you want full control over scheduling or use a subject with a mature shared-deck community. It is free either way. Choose Auto Cards if you want to turn your own material into a deck without typing every card.
